Aurora Lights, Beauty and Ancient History to Consider
The auroras were the clear winner in the “what was the result of this past weekend’s G-5 geomagnetic storm” category. NOAA called this storm the most significant since 2003.
Our local sun and Earth majesticaly connected in a dynamic relationship with one another to illustrate the sheer beauty, movement and magnitude of this visual interplay. “Plasma carries magnetic clouds that interact with the Earth’s magnetic field when it finds the planet on its path through interplanetary space. The interaction produces the light display...”
These auroras were visible in many areas of the world which normally do not see such geomagnetic storm impact. Northern lights reaching as far south as Mexico occurred on May 10th through May 12th. During a Carrington-level event, northern lights have been seen in the tropics, specifically the Caribbean. Named after Richard Carrington who in 1859 linked the aurora borealis with the sun.
Auroras are believed to have been depicted on cave paintings in Southern France dating back 30,000 years ago. 2,000 years ago Aristotle wrote about seeing the auroras in his book Meterology. Other cultures such as the Romans saw the auroras as the “Goddess of the Dawn” and a sign as to what may happen on Earth.
